Want to avoid synthetic air fresheners packed with harsh chemicals? In this article, you’ll learn how to easily make your own natural room spray with essential oils – completely free from hormone-disrupting substances.
A DIY room spray is inexpensive, simple, and can be customized with exactly the scent you love.
Why Choose a Homemade Room Spray?
The other day, I bought a room spray for the bathroom. The bottle looked stylish and natural – but the scent was artificial and overpowering. I prefer natural fragrances without unnecessary chemicals, so I decided to make my own.
Benefits of a homemade spray:
You choose the scent yourself
No synthetic additives or preservatives
Better for both health and the environment
Cheaper in the long run
Why You Can’t Just Mix Oil and Water
Essential oils and water don’t naturally mix. If you simply combine them, the oil will float on top, and the spray will be ineffective. The solution? Use a natural emulsifier.
Natural emulsifiers you can use:
Alcohol (such as vodka)
Salt (fine sea salt or Himalayan salt)
These help the oil and water blend together and also prevent bacterial growth.
I personally prefer salt for my room spray because it’s inexpensive, easy, effective, and doesn’t add any extra fragrance to my already beautiful essential oil blends.
Recipe: Homemade Room Spray with Essential Oils
Equipment for a 100 ml (3.4 fl oz) spray bottle
100 ml glass spray bottle (3.4 fl oz)
Small funnel
Ingredients:
1 tsp fine salt (e.g., Himalayan salt)
10 ml (0.34 fl. oz.) vodka or witch hazel (optional)
30–40 drops essential oils
Demineralized water (to fill up to 100 ml)
Instructions:
Add 1 tsp of salt to the spray bottle – use a funnel if needed.
Add 30–40 drops of essential oils.
Shake the bottle well.
Fill the rest of the bottle with water, stopping just below the neck so there’s room for the spray top.
Screw on the spray top and shake again.
Wipe the bottle and add a label if desired.
Shake before each use.
💡 Tip: Wait 1–2 days before using – this allows the scent to develop fully.

Conclusion – Natural Fragrance for Your Home
A homemade room spray is simple, cost-effective, and free from unnecessary additives. You’ll get a product that looks beautiful and smells exactly the way you want.
I bought a bathroom spray the other day, because I needed it, and because the bottle looked cool and natural in the shop.
I like a pleasant smell in my bathroom (read: toilet), but I prefer a natural odor from a synthetic. The room spray I’d bought had an artificial smell, so that got me motivated to make my own.
Turns out, making air freshener is not only easy; it’s also cheap, and you can create the scent YOU like the best.
